Nach 5 Jahren Arbeit ist es heute soweit: Die erste stabile Version 1.0 des neuen PHP-Frameworks FLOW3 wurde soeben veröffentlicht. FLOW3 wird die technische Grundlage für die neue TYPO3 Version 5.0 (Phoenix) sein und das netlogix Media-Team ist stolz schon seit Jahren an der Entwicklung dieser wegweisenden Software beteiligt zu sein. Die neue Google Analytics Beta: Neues Interface, Dashboards & mehr

Ursprünglich wurde das neue Google Analytics Interface auf der Google Analytics User Conference am 17. März in San Francisco vorgestellt. Nachdem zunächst nur einige ausgewählte Accounts und Interessenten, die sich explizit dafür angemeldet hatten, das neue Interface zu Gesicht bekamen, scheint Google nun nach und nach auch weiteren Nutzern den Zugriff auf die Beta-Version des neuen Google Analytics zu ermöglichen. ###IMAGE1### Ob der Zugriff auf das neue Interface bereits möglich ist, wird durch einen Link in der Statusleiste am Kopf der Seite ersichtlich. Nach einem Klick auf "Neue Version" wechselt man direkt in die neue Ansicht. Ein Wechsel zurück in das altbekannte Interface ist anschließend jederzeit über einen Link an der selben Stelle möglich. Mehr Übersicht in der Kontostartseite ###IMAGE2### Schon die neue Kontostartseite wurde völlig überarbeitet: Mit der neuen Such- und Filterfunktion finden auch Nutzer mit Zugriff auf viele unterschiedliche Konten den direkten Weg zum gewünschten Profil.
Icons neben jedem Profil erlauben den direkten Sprung in die wichtigsten Übersichten:

Nicht mehr enthalten sind in der neuen Übersicht die bekannten Metriken zu Besuchen, Besuchszeit, Absprungrate, Zielen und Änderung dieser Werte. Anschließend präsentiert sich die neue Google Analytics-Schaltzentrale in ihrer ganzen Pracht: ###IMAGE3### Dashboards für mehr Übersicht Gänzlich neu ist die Möglichkeit, beliebig viele Dashboards zu erstellen. Jedes Dashboard lässt sich aus Widgets zusammenstellen: ###IMAGE4### Dabei hat man die Wahl zwischen folgenden Widget-Typen:

Einfache Kennzahl (z.B. Besuche)
(Torten-)diagramm, das eine Kennzahl nach einer Dimension gruppiert. (z.B. Besucher nach den häufigsten Keywords, die sie zur Seite geführt haben in einem Tortendiagramm aufgegliedert)
Zeitlicher Verlauf (z.B. Vergleich von Neuen Besuchen mit Gesamtbesuchen über einen Zeitraum hinweg)
Tabelle (bis zu 10 Zeilen, die z.B. zu verschiedenen Ländern/Gebieten Besuche und Absprungrate aufführen)

Google möchte zu den Dashboards künftig wohl noch weitere Funktionalität hinzufügen. Am interessantesten fände ich hier die Möglichkeit, einmal erstellte Dashboards in verschiedenen Profilen zu wiederzuverwenden. Schneller Vergleichen mit "Plot Rows" Schon Walther Rathenau sagte: "Denken heißt vergleichen!" – und er hatte recht. Ob Google daraus die Motivation geschöpft hat - weiß ich natürlich nicht. Jedenfalls ist es nun möglich, in vielen Berichten einzelne Datenreihen per einfachem Mausklick zu vergleichen und im zeitlichen Verlauf am Kopf der Seite anzuzeigen. ###IMAGE5### So lassen sich z.B. die Marktanteile zweier bestimmter Browser über ein Jahr hinweg vergleichen, ohne dass dafür umständlich Segmente erstellt werden müssten. Die "Plot Rows"-Funktion ist in vielen Berichten verfügbar, allerdings nur, wenn die Anzeige auf Daten (tabellarisch) gestellt ist. ###IMAGE6### Event-Tracking mit Zielen vereint Vielen Google Analytics-Nutzern dürfe bereits das Tracking von Events (z.B. Abspieldauer eines Videos auf der Seite) und Conversions (z.B. Erreichen einer bestimmten Zielseite) bekannt sein. Künftig lassen sich beide Tracking-Mechanismen kombinieren: So kann ein Ziel z.B. dann erreicht werden, wenn ein Besucher ein Video länger als X Sekunden angezeigt hat. Die Einsatzmöglichkeiten für dieses Feature sind sehr flexibel, aber natürlich immer vom jeweiligen Projekt abhängig. Fazit Mit dem neuen Interface ist Google ein richtiger Schritt zu einem aktuelleren Analytics gelungen. Die neuen Features und die gefühlt deutlich agilere Bedienung sorgen dafür, dass die Arbeit mit Google Analytics einfacher und auch effizienter wird. Einige Features (z.B. der PDF-Export von Berichten) sind in der neuen Version noch nicht enthalten. Man darf aber davon ausgehen, dass Google hier in nächster Zeit noch nachlegen wird.

CSRF Protection in TYPO3 Phoenix – kindly provided by FLOW3

CSRF (also XSRF) stands for Cross-Site Request Forgery, which is a security hole that enables an attacker to execute privileged operations without being authenticated. If you look at TYPO3 Phoenix, there are a lot of privilege operations not everybody should be able to execute, just think about editing content, or even administrating the system. Let’s say you are the administrator of a TYPO3 Phoenix site: of course you are able to add users – and even creating another administrator account is just your prerogative. Everything is secure as you have to log in over an encrypted connection with your own secret account credentials, right? Sure, in a way you are right.
But what would happen if I sent you a link that will call the createAccount action with the data of another admin account? As soon as you click on the link, your browser opens the webpage and creates my shiny new administrator account. Remember: You are still logged in so you are unknowingly executing this operation with your own administrator privileges! Now let's make it even worse: If I sent you a link to your own TYPO3 Phoenix site, you're likely to notice that something weird is going on. But how would you know if I pushed that link through a shortening service like bit.ly? Chances are you're not going to notice it before it's too late. Facebook's CSRF vulnerability showed that this is not just a theoretical vector of attack, but a very real security threat (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Csrf/115082831838442). Of course, being a social network where everybody posts links all the time, making people click on a CSRF flavoured link was pretty simple. What can we do? Now the obvious question is: How can we prevent such an attack? The solution is to add a secure token – a (truly!) random string – to each link that leads to a privileged operation and to make sure this token is correct before executing anything. The token should be changed as often as possible to make it impossible to send you a working malicious link while you’re logged in to the system. In most cases, we can assume that it should be enough to generate one token when you log in. The FLOW3 way ###IMAGE1### So the solution is to add this token to all privileged links – fair enough. The complicated part is making sure that you do not forget any of them. You might have heard that one of FLOW3's goals is to support you as much as possible in developing a secure web application. Therefore, FLOW3 will add this token automatically for you. To make it short, in fact you don’t have to do anything to be CSRF save.
As soon as you create a link, e.g. with a Fluid viewhelper, or just using the URI-builder directly, FLOW3 will check if the link leads to a protected action and will add the token. The same thing happens for every request to such a protected controller. The FLOW3 firewall will notice that you are calling a non-public action and will only let the request pass if the token is there and valid. Otherwise it will directly drop the request long before one line of your application code has been executed. Disabling the magic... Certainly, there are situations where you don’t want to have the CSRF check in place. These are mostly actions that only show you some data. There, CSRF does not have a point because the attacker will never get the result of the action and the action itself does not manipulate any data or create accounts. You can disable the CSRF protection for these actions by simply adding a @skipCsrfProtection annotation to the according action method in your PHP code.

Plat_Forms 2011: Results of the FLOW3 team online!

After two great and exhausting contest days, we are proud to present the result of the FLOW3 team. The contest wasn't mainly about being the best, but more about gaining helpful insights in how FLOW3 performs in a real world scenario. With this new real life feedback we are now extra motivated and inspired for the upcoming development and the last few sprints on the road to the FLOW3 1.0 final release.

During the contest we decided not to publish our application, as the lack of time wouldn't have had permitted to respond to any public feedback anyways. But now that the contest is over, we are happy to be able to present a working FLOW3 application to you. Apache Solr Storage Backend for Extbase

For those of you who don't know (yet): Apache Solr is an enterprise search server that will allow you to search and facet through literally millions of objects in little to no time. As such it is the perfect storage backend for any application dealing with large amounts of structured data. Almost any self-respecting e-commerce application today will offer a faceted search mechanism to its users, making it easy and convenient to narrow down results to the most relevant products. Our storage backend, currently available for Extbase will allow you to incorporate an Apache Solr index server in your TYPO3/Extbase extensions. It does not require you to implement a special query syntax. Instead, it relies on the existing Extbase Query Object Model (QOM) for basic queries and extends it with faceted search functionality. We made the codebase available on forge.typo3.org today. Please be aware that this is a preview version - its functionality will continuously grow in the months to come. FLOW3 at Plat_Forms 2011: Enabling people to compare

Release of TYPO3 Phoenix Sprint 2 and FLOW3 alpha 10

It is really great to see a growing team that enthusiastically pushes the TYPO3 Phoenix project forward. With this release a lot of the conceptual work for TypoScript rendering and the ExtJS integration for the backend has become reality. If you want to see the results have a look at Robert's release notes including a great video at http://flow3.typo3.org/typo3-phoenix/download/release-notes/sprint-release-2/. At the same time we are proud to release another version of the heart of TYPO3 Phoenix, which is FLOW3 alpha 10. After working for month on features like dynamic AOP and transparent query rewriting for the persistence framework I am happy to see content security working and released. This feature will be used in TYPO3 Phoenix in the next two sprints and tackles all the checks and magic you need to protect your content or stored data from unwanted access. Have a look at the release notes at http://flow3.typo3.org/download/release-notes/100-alpha-10/ and watch the video we recorded to show the power of this great new feature. Last week, at the developer days in Elmshorn, a lot of new concepts have been formed to bring the backend user interface and future content editing to yet another amazing stage. Auch genervt vom neuen Google-Hintergrundbild? So wird man das Hintergrundbild wieder los. Per Knopfdruck abschalten lässt sich das Wallpaper heute leider nicht, aber es gibt ja immer Mittel und Wege:

Einfach 24h warten
Bei dem "Zwangshintergrund" handelt es sich um eine einmalige 24h andauernde Aktion mit Fotos verschiedener Künstler. In spätestens 24h sollte der Spuk also ein Ende haben.
Google sicher per SSL oder internationale Site aufrufen
Seit einiger Zeit ist Google auch über eine sichere HTTPS-Verbindung verfügbar: https://www.google.com - Zusatzbonus: Das Hintergrundbild ist weg. Alternativ geht auch folgender Link - allerdings unverschlüsselt: http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=de
Die JavaScript-Lösung
Nach dem Google-Aufruf einfach den Code javascript:google.fpd='1';google.fpdl(); in die Adresszeile einfügen und Enter drücken. Der Code-Schnipsel lässt sich übrigens auch in einem Bookmark speichern und per Knopfdruck wieder abrufen.
Für Firefox-Benutzer: Greasemonkey nutzen
Erst die Firefox-Erweiterung Greasemonkey installieren, dann das passende Script - und wieder ist das Hintergrundbild verschwunden. Greasemonkey ist eine Erweiterung, um beliebige Websites mit eigenem Code zu manipulieren.
Für Unternehmen oder Firefox+AdBlock-Nutzer: URLs sperren
Die Hintergrundbilder finden sich unter www.google.de/images/background/. Dieses Verzeichnis lässt sich einfach per AdBlock-Regel (|http://www.google.de/images/background/*) oder einer Regel auf einem zentralen HTTP-Filter sperren. Nachteil: Die Navigation wird etwas unleserlich.
Für eingeloggte Google-User
Klick auf "Hintergrundbild ändern" ganz unten links, dann eigenes einfarbiges Hintergrundbild hochladen.

Andererseits: Nachdem heute früh eher "garstige" Hintergrundbilder geschaltet waren, kann ich mir der aktuellen Dünenlandschaft als Hintergrund ganz gut leben. Mal schauen, was die nächste Stunde bringt.

TYPO3 Phoenix (5.0): It's alive!

The first sprint for the TYPO3 5.0 project just finished, resulting in the first public website rendered completely by TYPO3 Phoenix: http://phoenix.demo.typo3.org/ We are happy to contribute to the TYPO3 5.0 project by providing a home for the deployment platform in our TYPO3 hosting environment. Not impressed yet? Well - see for yourself what the first sprint was all about:

The demo deployment represents the features already implemented in the TYPO3 5.0 core: A simple website, rendered completely with the new TYPO3 5.0 API including TypoScript 2.0 Templates and a login controller that allows editors access to the backend interface. The TYPO3 phoenix demo site serves as an integration platform for the ongoing development of TYPO3 5.0. It will be updated continuously as new features are implemented and subsequent development sprints are completed. There are two different URLs to reach the demo:

Phoenix scrumified: Start of sprint 1

Last week the FLOW3 and TYPO3 5.0 (Codename: Phoenix) core team met in Lübeck to scrumify the development process of 5.0. After some general introduction how scrum works we planned the first sprint and defined what should be "done done" after the next four weeks. For the first sprint four userstories have been selected:

As a WebsiteUser I want to see a simple website.
As a PHP Developer I want to have an easy API to create a page and add content to it.
As a Editor I want to login and a basic editor interface should be loaded.
As Phoenix team member I want a state-of-the art build and CI environment.

The sprint itself is planned for four weeks and after this a so called sprint review meeting will take place. In this meeting the results will be presented by the core team to the product owner. Of course I will post the results here and (hopefully) can tell the story of a first successful sprint for phoenix. For more details on this you can also read the official announcement on typo3.org.

Google AdWords: EuGH entscheidet über Markenrechtsverletzungen

In einem lange erwarteten Urteil hat der Europäische Gerichtshof (EuGH) über die Nutzung fremder Marken in den Keywords von Google AdWords Kampagnen entschieden. Die Entscheidung umfasst dabei drei getrennte Fälle vermeintlicher Markenrechtsverletzungen in Google AdWords. Positive Quintessenz des Urteils: Eine Nutzung fremder Marken als Keywords ist grundsätzlich zulässig, wenn der Anzeigentext so gestaltet ist, dass keine Verwechslungsgefahr zwischen Markeninhaber und Werbetreibendem besteht. Open Source: On The Rocks - T3BOARD10 & The Progress on FLOW3

Last week there was this great event called T3BOARD10. Besides the skiing fun from morning to afternoon I am excited about the cool things that came around in terms of FLOW3 development. For me it has been a really productive week where I could discuss a lot of the currently available security features of FLOW3 and was also able to implement a bunch of new things. It was really nice to meet Helmut Hummel who shares the TYPO3 Security Team leadership with me and some other guys of the security team. It is always easier and brings a lot more progress if you can discuss things personally and not over mailinglists or phone calls. We discussed a lot about the current security issues that araise in the current 4.x branch and how we can create a safety net for 5.0 extensions to be secure by default. This is an ambitious goal, however we really aim for the best security support you can get for your 5.0 extensions. I am quite confindent that we can achieve a lot of the planned features and will be able to provide an even better security infrastructure in regards of development support and incident handling in the future. Another big topic were the planned features for the so called content security in FLOW3. This feature is needed to be able to restrict access to your content, which ist mainly persisted objects in FLOW3. It was great to spend some evenings with Karsten who is the main responsible for the persistence infrastructure. It think we could come up with a really elegant solution which transparently rewrites queries to the persistence layer according to the security policy. I will come up with detailled post about this topic as soon as the feature is finished. All in all I can say that this event was again a great success by means of fun, meeting the TYPO3 family and progress in development of fantastic new features.

World's first public FLOW3 application

I am glad to announce that the world's first public FLOW3 application has been launched. Having been part of the FLOW3 core team for 3 years, I am happy to see the blog of our lead developer Robert Lemke up and running on FLOW3. Although it's just a small application it is still a great showcase for how easy you can develop web application with the new FLOW3 framework. If you want to know more about the code that's behind this blog you should have a look at the various documentation resources, especially the "Getting Started Tutorial" on flow3.org. There are also some great videos which show some technical introductions to the new FLOW3 framework available. After 3 years of development it is really great to see the Framework in action and pointing to a great future of extremely fast web application development where you don't have to care about all these infrastructure things you have to program today again and again. I plan to write more posts about FLOW3 in the future, where I'll also explain the FLOW3's security infrastructure that is somehow my personal baby. Another thing I am really happy about is that we have the privilege to host this very first application and therefore can future proof our hosting environment for the upcoming technology.
